Remembering Mom
How can you thank your parents for all that they’ve given you?
Is it a meaningful conversation expressing sincere gratitude?
Is it taking them for hospital visits when their body doesn’t heal like it once did?
Is it giving them a grandchild that brings joy to them in all the little moments?
Or maybe it’s simply continuing their legacy by embodying their values of resilience, love and gratitude.
Two weeks ago, we got to celebrate Mom’s 72nd birthday. I didn’t realize it would be her last one with us.
Life has changed swiftly over the past couple of years.
There have been countless waves of grief given the sudden departures of both Mom and Dad, yet these difficult moments have delivered profound periods of reflection.
Mom was resilient and always made sure we had what we needed.
I’ll never forget a conversation with her when I was 22. I came home feeling dejected after handing out flyers on the corner of Robson and Burrard while interning for MTV Canada, and thinking ‘am I making a mistake’? ‘Should I just follow a safer, business career path’?
She asked me a simple question that still helps me navigate life decisions today.
“Will this bring you joy?”
I paused. Then nodded, believing that chasing the TV dream would.
“Then go after your dream and I’ll be here to support you when you need it.”
I will cherish the comfort provided from Mom’s gifts of love, belief and generosity.
We will make sure Nico not only feels that same love, but also, remind him of the great joy he can find in his own life and the special joy he always brought to his ‘Dimmy’.
It wasn’t always perfect, but what relationship ever is?
Mom is now with Dad in a different place.
I’m proud to be their son.
I’m proud to have a brother Zain Meghji who sacrificed everything to be there for Mom.
I’m proud to have Lori, Nico and incredible family and friends that just show up.
Shukar.
Rest in Peace Mama
